Three Articles for Entrepreneur October Issue… Sweet!

I’m still here.

Just today, I bought a copy of  the October issue of Entrepreneur Magazine-Philippines where I have three articles in a row:

1. Low-cost, wide-reach (an interview with Romy Bernal, a marketing consultant)

2. Network Marketing

3. Web and e-mail marketing (an interview with Deedee Santa Cruz-Espina, a managing director and entrepreneur)

Any other writing updates?

  • I have been taken in to write for SmartParenting.com.ph, another Summit Media Publication. Had a set of articles submitted last month, which are ready for upload anytime. Hope you can check their website.
  • I’m also finding time to write for Suite101.com. Besides that I love their SEO tutorials and appreciate writing tips from the editors, I think a residual type of income is still good income, after all. Leave the money issue, though. An exposure with Suite101, which has expanded their network to France, enriches my knowledge in web writing – and gives me a byline (lol).
  • The ebook project has been put off for several weeks, but the inspiration is back. I’m currently compiling my researches. Hope to get a client to buy it.
  • Then I’m now involved with a foreign web content company. The starting pay per article is just fair, but still it’s your call when you intend to write or not.
  • Lastly, I was assigned to write an article on emergency preparedness for SecurityMatters Magazine, basing it from my Typhoon Pepeng experience. Will update you when it comes out.

But I might be leaving this journal anytime soon.

I have given thought to finally get a domain and put up a more professional writer’s website. After reading two tutorials on how to create one and the need for one, I know it’s time. Though seemingly like a slow progress, I just felt that I don’t have much to present yet at that time. Now that work keeps coming, I guess it’s a good move.

But then again, you’ll know where to find me. Will post the link here. Hope to see you there, too.

I see a busy yet another good month ahead of me.

Freelance Writers Don’t Have to Starve

It annoys me somehow when I read articles that slam freelance writing as a living. I have no idea where they’re coming from, if they have done their thorough research, or have been through REAL freelance writing to even say those things. Okay, simply looking at their photos and history, these people are still young and fresh. Let’s give them time to explore things.

Now, don’t expect to hit jackpot when you’re just starting out – but there is money in freelance writing once you get to discover how things work. If you’re too picky and simply focusing on one method, say, getting a stint in print – that’s where freelance writers could starve! But not when you fuse each form of writing, in print and web, and get regular clients. Magazines usually pay a month, or even several months later, so don’t merely focus on that in the beginning. Second, of course, you must have at least a few months to a year of savings prior to jumping into the pool of freelancers. I agree with that.

You see, I am a single mom who feeds a son (and myself) through freelance writing. Honestly, I was groping in the dark for about six months, when I still didn’t know the tricks. A meager income? Yes, you can call it that way. If you can’t handle such as part of the whole freelance writing experience, then drop the idea.

While I pursue to get regular writing assignments in print, I take writing assignments online to sustain a living. I’m very grateful that I get different projects monthly now. Plus, I take time to continue learning the writing craft and the ways of web life. Though I have not yet truly given a straight 8-hour work daily, or get paid by the hour for my projects, I’m already earning a decent income. What more if I work real hard, and join every writing opportunity? But I’m living one day at a time, because I have a son to look after every minute of every day – who comes first and above everything else.

I’m writing this to encourage other writers out there, and to debunk the myth as well.
